Bike Devil’s Week on Two-Wheels: Our Weekly News Update – 7th October

Posted 7th October 2019

Another week, another update! It’s time for the Bike Devil Week on Two-Wheels…

We can’t start anywhere other than MotoGP, as marvellous Marc Marquez claimed his sixth MotoGP crown and eighth world title by winning in Thailand. Going into the weekend it looked a foregone conclusion, with Marquez only needing to score two more points that Andrea Dovizioso to clinch the crown. However, a monster highside in FP1 left the champion-elect battered and bruised. He returned in FP2 but crashed again in qualifying. Maybe he’s human after all, some thought.

Turns out he’s not, and the race was almost a carbon copy of Misano, with Marquez slotting in behind pole-sitter Fabio Quartararo and sitting there for the full race distance. The race came to life on the final lap, as Marquez passed the Frenchman at the end of the first sector. He looked to have put enough into the rookie sensation but the Yamaha man was on the back wheel of the Repsol Honda and launched a last-ditch effort to overtake into the final turn. He ran marginally wide though, allowing Marquez to drive underneath him and pip him to the line to make it eight world titles. Six in MotoGP from the last seven years. And he’s still only 26. But maybe Fabio is going to be the one who takes the fight to him in the coming years…

Meanwhile, former MotoGP hotshot Scott Redding was busy doing a BSB double at Donington Park, moving one step closer to securing the 2019 title. He disappeared at the front of race one to win from Tommy Bridewell and Josh Brookes. In race two he pulled another sizeable gap at the front, but Brookes was biting the screen of his Ducati behind him and clawing back ground on his teammate in the closing stages. Sadly for the Australian, it wasn’t enough, and with three races to go at Brands, the smart money is firmly on Redding for the championship.
